According to FIFA Direct official Twitter, in "FIFA 21", players cannot cross the console generation, nor can they play across platforms. However, players can transfer their ultimate team progress, from the current generation console to the next generation console, such as from PS4 to PS5, from Xbox One to Xbox Series X.

 

 
"You won't be able to play across console generation or cross-play in FIFA 21," the tweet reads. "However, you will be able to carry over your FUT progression from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox 1 to Xbox Series X." This means that current-generation FIFA 21 players will not be able to play with their friends who purchase the game on next-gen consoles, even though the game supports Dual Entitlement - current-gen players will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version of FIFA 21 for free.

 
This is particularly disappointing news, as the idea of cross-gen cross-play has been practically expected from most games with online or co-op modes. It also makes the decision to get a next-gen console less enticing, if it means leaving behind everyone who hasn’t.
 
FIFA 21 is launching on October 6th on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game will also launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, complete with some exclusive features made possible by the new hardware.
 
FIFA 21 will support EA’s Dual Entitlement scheme, meaning players can upgrade their copy from PS4 to PS5, or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X at no extra cost.
